Lake Mead, the largest artificial reservoir in the United States, has fallen to a record-low water level of 1,040.4 feet (317.1 metres) above sea level, highlighting the growing water stress in the American Southwest.
About Lake Mead
- Lake Mead is a major reservoir created by the Hoover Dam on the Colorado River.
- Located along the Arizona–Nevada border, around 40 km east of Las Vegas, it is a crucial source of drinking water, irrigation and hydroelectric power for the southwestern United States.
- The reservoir was formed in the 1930s after the construction of Hoover Dam and was named after Elwood Mead, Commissioner of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation from 1924 to 1936.
- At full capacity, Lake Mead can hold around 31 million acre-feet (38.3 billion cubic metres) of water. Together with Lake Powell, it forms an important reservoir system for regulating the Colorado River.
Why is Lake Mead Declining?
The decline is driven by a combination of climatic and human factors. Poor Rocky Mountain snowpack reduces snowmelt feeding the Colorado River, while a prolonged multi-decade megadrought has reduced precipitation and increased evaporation because of rising temperatures.
At the same time, water allocations to the seven Colorado River basin states—Arizona, California, Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming—and Mexico have historically exceeded the river's average natural flow, contributing to chronic overuse.

About Indian Peafowl
The Indian peafowl (Pavo cristatus) is a large, colourful bird belonging to the pheasant family (Phasianidae). It was declared the National Bird of India in 1963 and has considerable cultural, ecological and mythological significance.
It is native to South Asia, particularly India, and is also found in Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan and Pakistan. It inhabits a wide range of environments, including open forests, thorn scrub, agricultural fields, grasslands and areas around human settlements.

Key Features
Indian peafowl exhibit pronounced sexual dimorphism. Males have a metallic-blue head and neck with a prominent crest, while females have comparatively dull brown plumage that provides camouflage during nesting.
The male's spectacular "tail" is actually an elongated upper-tail covert train, containing more than 200 feathers with eye-like markings called ocelli. These are prominently displayed during courtship.
The white peafowl presented by India represents a rare genetic colour variation associated with leucism. Unlike albino birds, leucistic peafowls generally retain normally pigmented eyes.
Indian peafowl are omnivorous ground feeders, consuming seeds, grains, insects, small reptiles and young snakes. They generally roost on trees or elevated structures at night.

Colombia Earthquake

In News:
Recently, Colombia declared a national state of emergency following a magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck western parts of the country. The earthquake was centred near San José del Palmar in Chocó and was described by the Colombian Geological Service as the strongest earthquake to hit the country in the 21st century.
Why is Colombia Highly Prone to Earthquakes?
- Colombia lies in a complex tectonic environment where the Nazca Plate converges with and subducts beneath the South American Plate along the Pacific margin. This subduction generates considerable tectonic stress and makes western Colombia particularly seismically active.
- The country is also influenced by the interaction of the Nazca, South American and Caribbean Plates, along with smaller tectonic blocks. Consequently, earthquakes can originate from subduction zones, crustal faults and deeper parts of the Earth's crust.
- Colombia's location within the Pacific Ring of Fire further contributes to its seismic vulnerability. The continued convergence of tectonic plates has also contributed to the uplift and deformation of the Andes, creating numerous active faults and zones of accumulated crustal stress.
- The August 2026 earthquake occurred at a depth of around 107 km, placing it in the intermediate-focus category (70–300 km). Its depth reflects the complex tectonic environment associated with the descending oceanic lithosphere.
- The hazard is amplified by human exposure, as cities such as Cali, Bogotá, Medellín, Pereira and Manizales are located within or close to active Andean seismic zones.
Pacific Ring of Fire
- The Pacific Ring of Fire, or Circum-Pacific Belt, is a horseshoe-shaped zone surrounding the Pacific Ocean characterised by intense earthquake and volcanic activity. It extends for approximately 40,000 km and follows the boundaries of several tectonic plates.
- The region is associated with around 90% of the world's earthquakes and nearly 75% of its active volcanoes. Major plates involved include the Pacific, Nazca, Cocos, Juan de Fuca, North American, Philippine and Indo-Australian Plates.
- A major mechanism responsible for its seismic and volcanic activity is subduction, where one tectonic plate descends beneath another. The resulting plate convergence, fault movement and accumulation of tectonic stress can trigger earthquakes, while processes associated with the descending slab can contribute to magma generation and volcanism.
Colombia: Geographical Significance
- Colombia has a distinctive geographical position as the only South American country with coastlines on both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.
- Its eastern tropical grasslands, known as Los Llanos, form part of the Orinoco Basin.

Tribunals Reforms Bill, 2026

The Lok Sabha passed the Tribunals Reforms Bill, 2026 by voice vote, amid opposition protests and without debate. The Bill seeks to repeal the Tribunals Reforms Act, 2021 and establish a National Tribunals Commission (NTC) to oversee appointments, service conditions and administration of tribunals.
Key Provisions
- The Bill proposes an 11-member National Tribunals Commission comprising a Chairperson who has been a Supreme Court Judge or Chief Justice of a High Court, two judicial members and two technical members. The technical members must have at least 25 years of relevant experience.
- The NTC would handle appointments, performance reviews, complaints against tribunal members and maintenance of a National Tribunals Data Grid. Appointments would be made by the Central Government, with consultation with the Chief Justice of India for the Chairperson and judicial members.
- For each vacancy, the selection committee would recommend one candidate and one name on the waiting list, while the government would have to finalise the appointment within three months. Members would generally have a five-year tenure, subject to the prescribed age limits.
Background: Tribunals in India
Tribunals were introduced to provide specialised and relatively speedy adjudication and reduce the burden on conventional courts. The first tribunal, the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT), was established in 1941.
The constitutional framework for tribunals was introduced through the 42nd Constitutional Amendment Act, 1976, which inserted Part XIV-A containing Articles 323A and 323B.
- Article 323A: Deals with administrative tribunals concerning recruitment and service conditions of public servants.
- Article 323B: Enables tribunals for matters such as taxation, industrial disputes, land reforms and other specified areas.
Judicial Safeguards
The Supreme Court has repeatedly emphasised that tribunals cannot compromise judicial independence and separation of powers.
- In S.P. Sampath Kumar (1986), the Court held that tribunals could serve as alternatives to High Courts if they provided an equally effective mechanism of justice.
- In L. Chandra Kumar (1997), the Court established that decisions of tribunals remain subject to judicial review by High Courts and the Supreme Court. Thus, tribunals cannot completely replace constitutional courts.
- The Madras Bar Association cases further addressed issues relating to tribunal appointments, tenure and executive interference.
Concerns with the Existing System
- Tribunals have faced persistent problems of vacancies, pendency, inadequate infrastructure and administrative dependence on parent ministries.
- A major concern is executive dominance, particularly because the government may itself be a litigant before several tribunals. Excessive executive control over appointments, tenure, salaries and removal can therefore affect perceived and actual independence.
- Short tenures and the possibility of reappointment can also create incentives for members to remain dependent on the executive.
Significance of the Bill
The proposed NTC could provide a centralised and specialised institutional framework for tribunal administration. Separating tribunal management from individual parent ministries could improve consistency in appointments, infrastructure, finances and performance monitoring.
However, the effectiveness of the reform will depend on the actual independence of the Commission. Since the Central Government retains an important role in appointments and the Secretariat is headed by a Central Government Secretary, concerns regarding executive influence remain.
Way Forward
Tribunal reforms should seek to balance efficiency with judicial independence. Administrative and financial control should be insulated from ministries that are frequent litigants before tribunals. Appointment processes should ensure meaningful judicial and expert participation, while transparent performance audits and adequate infrastructure can help reduce vacancies and pendency.
