Colombia Earthquake

Recently, Colombia declared a national state of emergency following a magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck western parts of the country. The earthquake was centred near San José del Palmar in Chocó and was described by the Colombian Geological Service as the strongest earthquake to hit the country in the 21st century.
Why is Colombia Highly Prone to Earthquakes?
- Colombia lies in a complex tectonic environment where the Nazca Plate converges with and subducts beneath the South American Plate along the Pacific margin. This subduction generates considerable tectonic stress and makes western Colombia particularly seismically active.
- The country is also influenced by the interaction of the Nazca, South American and Caribbean Plates, along with smaller tectonic blocks. Consequently, earthquakes can originate from subduction zones, crustal faults and deeper parts of the Earth's crust.
- Colombia's location within the Pacific Ring of Fire further contributes to its seismic vulnerability. The continued convergence of tectonic plates has also contributed to the uplift and deformation of the Andes, creating numerous active faults and zones of accumulated crustal stress.
- The August 2026 earthquake occurred at a depth of around 107 km, placing it in the intermediate-focus category (70–300 km). Its depth reflects the complex tectonic environment associated with the descending oceanic lithosphere.
- The hazard is amplified by human exposure, as cities such as Cali, Bogotá, Medellín, Pereira and Manizales are located within or close to active Andean seismic zones.
Pacific Ring of Fire
- The Pacific Ring of Fire, or Circum-Pacific Belt, is a horseshoe-shaped zone surrounding the Pacific Ocean characterised by intense earthquake and volcanic activity. It extends for approximately 40,000 km and follows the boundaries of several tectonic plates.
- The region is associated with around 90% of the world's earthquakes and nearly 75% of its active volcanoes. Major plates involved include the Pacific, Nazca, Cocos, Juan de Fuca, North American, Philippine and Indo-Australian Plates.
- A major mechanism responsible for its seismic and volcanic activity is subduction, where one tectonic plate descends beneath another. The resulting plate convergence, fault movement and accumulation of tectonic stress can trigger earthquakes, while processes associated with the descending slab can contribute to magma generation and volcanism.
Colombia: Geographical Significance
- Colombia has a distinctive geographical position as the only South American country with coastlines on both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.
- Its eastern tropical grasslands, known as Los Llanos, form part of the Orinoco Basin.
- Despite occupying less than 1% of Earth's land area, Colombia contains nearly 10% of global biodiversity, making it one of the world's megadiverse countries.
